Tesla Launches Short-Term Rentals Amid EV Tax Credit Expiration
Tesla has introduced a short-term rental program in California as federal EV tax credits NEAR expiration. The initiative, currently available in San Diego and Costa Mesa, offers rentals ranging from three to seven days with daily rates starting at $60. Vehicles come equipped with Full Self-Driving capabilities and free Supercharger access.
The program serves as an extended test-drive opportunity, with Tesla offering a $250 purchase credit to customers who rent before buying. This strategic move aims to counteract softening demand as the $7,500 New Clean Vehicle Credit phases out for purchases after September 2025.
Tesla plans nationwide expansion of the rental service by year-end, bypassing traditional rental agencies. The direct-to-consumer approach reflects Tesla's broader strategy to maintain sales momentum through experiential marketing rather than relying on diminishing government incentives.
